Ketu Mahadasha: 7 Years of Letting Go, Honestly Explained

Ketu Mahadasha is short, and it still carries more dread than periods three times its length. Ketu is the south lunar node, a point rather than a body, and its reputation for loss and isolation comes mostly from its name. Here is how it is actually read, what shapes the results, how its nine sub-periods are sized, and what the period asks of you.

Ketu Mahadasha is a 7-year period in the Vimshottari dasha system. It comes after Mercury's 17 years and is followed by Venus's 20. Ketu is also the first lord in the fixed order, so the cycle begins with Ketu and Mercury Mahadasha is the one that hands it back.

Not everyone gets the full 7 years. The Moon's position at birth decides where in the 120-year cycle you start, so if you were born during Ketu Mahadasha you receive only the balance. For example, if the Moon had crossed a quarter of a Ketu-ruled nakshatra at birth, three quarters of the period remains: 5.25 years (63 months). Everyone else enters it whole, on the exact date Mercury Mahadasha ends.

What Ketu Is, and What Its Periods Are About

Ketu is the south lunar node: the point exactly opposite Rahu, always 180° away. Like Rahu it has no body, so tradition reads it through the sign it sits in, the house it occupies and what it is joined with, rather than as a planet with a fixed temperament.

Ketu is associated with detachment, release, the past, introspection, research and intuition, and at the far end with moksha, the idea of letting go of the cycle altogether. It is also associated with sudden cuts, withdrawal and the feeling that something you once chased no longer holds your interest. Where Rahu's period asks how far you will go for what you want, Ketu's tends to ask what you can stop needing.

People often describe it as losing interest in a goal, stepping back from a place, role or group, or turning toward study, practice or solitude. It can also feel like drifting, with no pull in any direction. These are tendencies, not events, and which one you get depends on the chart.

One honest caveat: traditions disagree about Ketu's dignity. Some give it Scorpio as own or exalted sign, some give exaltation to Sagittarius, and some assign it no dignity at all. We do not lean on a dignity label for Ketu; the sign lord, house and conjunctions are what a careful reading uses.

What Shapes Ketu's Results

Ketu's name decides very little. Five things in your chart do:

FactorWhat it changes
House Ketu occupiesThe area of life where detachment or withdrawal is felt. The 12th house is traditionally linked with release and moksha; in other houses Ketu cuts a different thread.
Sign lord of KetuKetu tends to behave like the planet that rules its sign, so that planet's strength and houses colour the period.
ConjunctionsA planet joined with Ketu is traditionally read as muted or turned inward, so the themes of that planet are felt less outwardly.
Rahu in the opposite houseRahu and Ketu always sit opposite each other and are read as one axis: what Ketu lets go of in one house, Rahu reaches for in the other.
Antardasha runningWhich planet is in charge inside the period at any moment, which is the next section.

The honest framing: Ketu is easy to fear because detachment sounds like loss. It is a period of loosening, not a sentence, and at 7 years it is one of the shorter ones. However it feels, it has an exact end date.

The Nine Antardashas Inside Ketu Mahadasha

Ketu Mahadasha starts with Ketu–Ketu, then follows the fixed Vimshottari order. Each length is 7 × (the sub-planet's years) ÷ 120:

Antardasha (in order)Length
Ketu–Ketu4.9 months
Ketu–Venus14.0 months
Ketu–Sun4.2 months
Ketu–Moon7.0 months
Ketu–Mars4.9 months
Ketu–Rahu12.6 months
Ketu–Jupiter11.2 months
Ketu–Saturn13.3 months
Ketu–Mercury11.9 months

These lengths add up to the full 7 years (84 months). The opening Ketu–Ketu stretch is the shortest, at 4.9 months, and the closing Ketu–Mercury stretch (11.9 months) is the handover into Venus Mahadasha. Ketu–Venus is the longest of the nine at 14.0 months, which is where the sign-lord and house questions above tend to be tested. Because the whole period is only 7 years, each sub-period passes quickly.

What Comes After Ketu Mahadasha

Ketu Mahadasha is followed by Venus Mahadasha, the longest period in the cycle at 20 years. The change of tone is large: from withdrawal and release to relationships, money, comfort and enjoyment. Whether it feels that way depends on Venus's houses and strength in your chart. Before Ketu comes Mercury Mahadasha, the last period of the cycle.

What Ketu Mahadasha Cannot Tell You

It cannot tell you that you will lose something, leave something or turn spiritual. It tells you that withdrawal, release and inward turning are the themes of this period, and the house and sign lord tell you where. Be wary of anyone who calls Ketu Mahadasha a disaster, or a guarantee of enlightenment, without looking at your sign, house and conjunctions.

The general rule and the missing piece: Everything on this page can be learned from a table: the order, the years, the lengths. What a table cannot give you is where Ketu sits in your chart, which planet rules its sign, and what Rahu is doing opposite it. Those turn "Ketu: 7 years" into your own dated timeline.

"Ketu does not add. It asks what you can put down."

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is Ketu Mahadasha?

Ketu Mahadasha lasts 7 years. It follows Mercury Mahadasha and is followed by Venus Mahadasha. If you were born during it, your Mahadasha is only the remaining balance rather than the full 7 years, because the Moon's position at birth sets where in the cycle you start.

Is Ketu Mahadasha bad?

Not inherently. Ketu loosens attachment rather than punishing, and whether that feels like freedom or loss depends on the house it occupies and the planet that rules its sign. It also has an exact end date, and at 7 years it is one of the shorter periods.

What are the antardashas in Ketu Mahadasha, and in what order?

In order: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. Each is sized as 7 times the sub-planet's years divided by 120, so Ketu–Ketu is about 5 months, Ketu–Venus 14 months and Ketu–Mercury about 12 months, adding up to the full 7 years (84 months).

What kinds of events are linked to Ketu Mahadasha?

Ketu is associated with detachment, withdrawal, research, introspection, sudden endings and loss of interest in earlier goals. Which of these shows up depends on the house Ketu occupies and its sign lord. These are tendencies, not predictions of specific events.

Why do astrologers disagree about Ketu?

Because Ketu is a mathematical point rather than a body, traditions differ on whether it has an own sign or an exaltation sign, with some naming Scorpio and others Sagittarius. A careful reading therefore leans on the sign lord, the house and the conjunctions in your chart rather than a single fixed rule.

What comes after Ketu Mahadasha?

Venus Mahadasha, a 20-year period centred on relationships, money and comfort. Many people notice the contrast with Ketu's inward, loosening character. Whether that is your experience depends on Venus's houses and strength in your chart.

Are there remedies for Ketu Mahadasha?

Traditional remedies exist, but none has evidence behind it, and we do not claim any changes outcomes. A more useful response is practical: know which antardashas are most intense and when they end, avoid irreversible decisions made only to escape a feeling, and use the quieter energy for study or work you would still value afterwards.

How do I find when my Ketu Mahadasha begins and ends?

It starts at the end of Mercury Mahadasha, and every date in the sequence comes from your Moon's exact position at birth. You need your exact birth date, time and place, and a dasha calculator returns the exact start and end of Ketu Mahadasha and each sub-period.
