Moon Mahadasha: 10 Years of Chandra, Honestly Explained

The Moon is the one planet that every dasha calculation starts from, and its own period is routinely reduced to "emotional ups and downs". The classical picture is more specific. The Moon governs the mind, home, mother and public standing, and its strength changes with its phase. Here is what shapes the results, how the nine antardashas are sized, and what the period asks of you.

Moon Mahadasha is a 10-year period in the Vimshottari dasha system. It comes after Sun's 6 years and is followed by Mars's 7. The Moon is also the planet the whole system is built on: your Moon's nakshatra at birth decides which Mahadasha you begin in.

Not everyone gets the full 10 years. The Moon's position at birth decides where in the 120-year cycle you start, so if you were born during Moon Mahadasha you receive only the balance. For example, if the Moon had crossed a quarter of a Moon-ruled nakshatra at birth, three quarters of the period remains: 7.5 years (90 months). Everyone else enters it whole, on the exact date Sun Mahadasha ends.

What the Moon Stands For

The Moon is the planet of mind, emotion, home, mother, nourishment and public standing. Its periods tend to centre on mood and mental state, family and home life, changes of residence, the relationship with the mother, and how widely you are liked or known. It changes faster than any other planet, and its periods tend to feel changeable too.

The Moon colours how things feel at least as much as what happens. Two people in the same Moon Mahadasha can have the same events and very different experiences of them, and that is partly why this period is so often described in vague terms. The sub-periods are where it becomes specific.

What Shapes the Moon's Results

The Moon's name does not decide the quality of its period. Five things in your chart do:

FactorWhat it changes
House the Moon rulesThe Moon rules a single sign, Cancer, so one house sets the subject of the period. For a Cancer ascendant it is the lagna lord.
House the Moon occupiesThis is where its changeability and its emotional weight show up in daily life.
Dignity and phaseThe Moon is exalted in Taurus, strong in its own sign Cancer, and debilitated in Scorpio. Its phase also matters: a waxing, bright Moon is read as stronger than a waning one close to the new Moon.
Aspects and conjunctionsA Moon joined or aspected by supportive planets reads differently from one under strain, and a Moon close to the Sun is a thin, new Moon with less strength.
Transits during the periodWhere Jupiter and Saturn are moving at the time activates what the dasha promises. Sade Sati is a separate transit measured from the same Moon, and the two can overlap or run apart.

The honest framing: A heavy Moon period, with unsettled moods or turbulence at home, is not a sentence. It is a period with an exact end date, and the nine antardashas inside it are not uniform. If it feels heavy for real, that is a reason to talk to someone, not to read harder into a chart.

The Nine Antardashas Inside Moon Mahadasha

Moon Mahadasha starts with Moon–Moon, then follows the fixed Vimshottari order. Each length is 10 × (the sub-planet's years) ÷ 120:

Antardasha (in order)Length
Moon–Moon10.0 months
Moon–Mars7.0 months
Moon–Rahu18.0 months
Moon–Jupiter16.0 months
Moon–Saturn19.0 months
Moon–Mercury17.0 months
Moon–Ketu7.0 months
Moon–Venus20.0 months
Moon–Sun6.0 months

These lengths add up to the full 10 years (120 months). The opening Moon–Moon stretch is 10.0 months, and the closing Moon–Sun stretch (6.0 months) is the handover into Mars Mahadasha. The longest sub-period inside Moon Mahadasha is Moon–Venus at 20.0 months, followed by Moon–Saturn at 19.0.

Born Under Rohini, Hasta or Shravana?

The Moon rules three nakshatras: Rohini, Hasta and Shravana. If your Moon was in one of them at birth, you were born into Moon Mahadasha, and your first period is the balance, which depends on how far the Moon had travelled through that nakshatra. Everyone else reaches it later in life, whole, on the exact date Sun Mahadasha ends.

What Comes After Moon Mahadasha

Moon Mahadasha is followed by Mars Mahadasha, which lasts 7 years. The tone changes from reflective and emotional to energetic and assertive: more action, more friction, more drive. Many people notice the change of pace. Before the Moon comes Sun Mahadasha.

What Moon Mahadasha Cannot Tell You

It cannot tell you that you will be anxious, low or at peace, and it is not a diagnosis of anything. It tells you that mind, home, mother and public standing are the subjects of this period, and the antardasha narrows down when. Be wary of anyone who says Moon Mahadasha means mental trouble, or guaranteed popularity, without looking at your Moon's sign, phase, house and aspects.

The general rule and the missing piece: Everything on this page can be learned from a table. What a table cannot give you is your Moon: the house Cancer falls on for your ascendant, where the Moon sits, and how strong it is. Those turn "Moon: 10 years" into your own dated timeline.

"The Moon does not decide what happens. It colours how it feels."

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is Moon Mahadasha?

Moon Mahadasha lasts 10 years. It follows Sun Mahadasha and is followed by Mars Mahadasha. If you were born during it, your Mahadasha is only the remaining balance rather than the full 10 years. People whose Moon was in Rohini, Hasta or Shravana at birth begin their timeline in it.

Is Moon Mahadasha good or bad?

Neither by name alone. The Moon governs mind, home and public standing, and the quality of the period depends on the house it rules and occupies in your chart, its sign and its phase. A heavy Moon period has an exact end date, and the antardashas inside it differ in tone.

What are the antardashas in Moon Mahadasha, and in what order?

In order: Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus and Sun. Each is sized as 10 times the sub-planet's years divided by 120, so Moon–Moon is 10 months, Moon–Mars about 7 months and Moon–Venus 20 months, adding up to the full 10 years (120 months).

What kinds of events are linked to Moon Mahadasha?

The Moon is associated with mood and mental state, home and family, changes of residence, the mother and public standing. Which of these becomes prominent depends on the house the Moon rules and occupies in your chart. These are tendencies, not predictions of specific events.

Does the Moon's phase matter?

Classically, yes. A waxing Moon, bright and moving toward full, is read as stronger than a waning Moon close to the new moon. Dignity matters too: the Moon is exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio.

What comes after Moon Mahadasha?

Mars Mahadasha, a 7-year period. Many people notice the contrast: the Moon's reflective, changeable character gives way to a more energetic and assertive period. Whether that is your experience depends on Mars's houses and strength in your chart.

Are there remedies for Moon Mahadasha?

Traditional remedies exist, but none has evidence behind it, and we do not claim any changes outcomes. A more useful response is practical: know which antardashas are most intense and when they end, keep routines steady when moods are not, and if a period feels heavy in a real way, speak to a professional rather than relying on a chart.

How do I find when my Moon Mahadasha begins and ends?

It starts at the end of Sun Mahadasha, and every date in the sequence comes from your Moon's exact position at birth. You need your exact birth date, time and place, and a dasha calculator returns the exact start and end of Moon Mahadasha and each sub-period.
