Why General Chatbots Get Your Chart, Transits and Dates Wrong

A lot of people now paste their kundli, or a screenshot of it, into a general chatbot and ask when things will change. The answer comes back fluent, confident and specific. That is exactly the problem: fluent and specific is what these models are built to produce, whether or not the numbers underneath are right. Here is what a chatbot can and cannot do with your chart, where it breaks, and a test you can run yourself in ten minutes.

This is not an argument that chat models are useless for astrology, and it is not about any one product. It is about a specific mismatch: a reading depends on calculated facts, and a general chat model is a text predictor, not a calculator. Keep those two jobs separate and almost everything below follows.

Two Different Jobs: Computing and Explaining

Every Vedic reading has two stages, and they need different tools.

Stage one is computing. From your birth date, time and place, work out where each planet was, which sign and degree rises on the horizon, which nakshatra and pada the Moon is in, and from the Moon's exact position, your entire dasha timeline. Later, work out where the planets are today and which of them are touching your chart. This is astronomy and arithmetic. There is one right answer, and it comes from an ephemeris: the table or software that gives the exact position of each planet for any moment.

Stage two is explaining. Take those finished facts and say what they mean for a person in plain language. This is judgement and writing, and it is where a language model is genuinely good.

A general chatbot is built for stage two. Asked to do stage one, it does what it always does, which is write the most plausible-sounding next words. Plausible is not the same as computed.

"A chatbot can explain a chart you already trust. It is not a way to find out what your chart is."

"I Uploaded My Chart" Does Not Solve It

The common workaround is to hand the model your chart so it does not have to calculate anything. It helps less than it seems, for four reasons.

1. A chart picture has no degrees. The usual North or South Indian diagram shows which sign and house each planet is in, and little else. Your dasha timeline is set by the Moon's exact position inside its nakshatra, a span of 13°20′, so without the degree the model cannot derive the dates. It will still give you dates. They are guesses presented as results.

2. Reading the picture is itself error-prone. North Indian charts fix the houses and rotate the signs; South Indian charts fix the signs and rotate the houses. A model that mistakes one layout for the other will put planets in the wrong houses, and every later conclusion inherits the mistake without any sign that something went wrong.

3. Dates need arithmetic over many steps. Vimshottari divides a 120-year cycle into planetary periods of 6 to 20 years, each split into sub-periods, each split again. Getting an Antardasha end date right means chaining several exact calculations. A text predictor is weakest at precisely this kind of long exact chain.

4. "Now" is not in the chart. Transits depend on where the planets are today. Unless the model is connected to live astronomical data, it works from memory, and it has no reliable way to know today's positions.

Where It Goes Wrong, by Question Type

You askWhat a correct answer needsWhere a chatbot slips
"What is my current dasha?"The Moon's exact degree at birth, then the dasha tablesGuesses the Moon's degree, so every date after it shifts
"When does this period end?"Exact start date plus the sub-period lengths, chainedArithmetic drift; round dates that look right and are not
"Where is Saturn now? When does it change sign?"Live ephemeris for today, including retrograde turnsRecalls a rough year; slow planets can cross a sign boundary more than once, so the date matters
"Am I in Sade Sati?"Your Moon sign, Saturn's exact sign today, and ingress datesWrong Moon sign when the Moon is near a boundary, or a stale idea of where Saturn is
"Do I have this yoga?"Exact placements, dignity and conditions, all computedNames a yoga because the words fit, without checking the conditions
"Is it combust? Is it retrograde?"Exact longitudes and speeds from the ephemerisNo way to know; says yes or no with equal confidence

Transits Are the Hardest Case

Natal facts at least stay fixed, so a wrong answer is wrong the same way every time. Transits move. Saturn spends roughly two and a half years in a sign, Jupiter about a year, and the lunar nodes around a year and a half. Slow planets also turn retrograde, so near a sign boundary a planet can enter a sign, back out, and enter again. An honest transit answer needs the exact dates of each crossing and which of them your chart is actually sensitive to.

A chatbot working from memory tends to give you the broad story ("Saturn is moving through such-and-such a sign") without the dates, or with dates that are close enough to feel right. For a question like "when does this pressure ease", close enough is the whole answer.

Same question, different answer: chat models generate text with built-in randomness. Ask the same thing twice and you can get two different dates, both stated with the same confidence. A computed chart does not do this: the same birth details and the same day always give the same positions and the same dasha dates. If your reading changes when you re-ask it, the reading was never a calculation.

Try It Yourself: A Ten-Minute Test

You do not have to take this on trust. Use your own details and any chatbot you like.

Test 1: consistency. In two separate new chats, ask: "For this birth date, time and place, which nakshatra and pada is the Moon in, and when does my current Mahadasha and Antardasha end?" If the two chats do not agree with each other, at least one is wrong, and you have no way to tell which.

Test 2: the present. Ask: "Where is Saturn today, and on what exact date does it next change sign?" Check the answer against an ephemeris or a panchang. Note whether it gave a precise date or a vague year.

Test 3: the screenshot. Upload a chart picture with no degrees and ask for the exact end date of your current Antardasha. That cannot be derived from the picture, so the honest answer is "I can't tell from this". Notice what you actually get.

Then compare everything with a chart computed from your birth details by an ephemeris engine. The point is not to catch a chatbot out. It is to see which numbers you can build a decision on.

Where Chatbots Are Useful

Fair is fair. A chat model is good at explaining what a term means, putting a classical idea in plain words, translating between languages, and helping you decide what to ask next. Used that way, on facts you already have, it is a real help.

And a model that is connected to a real ephemeris is a different thing from a model working from memory. That is not an argument against the technology. It is the whole idea: let a calculator calculate and let the language model explain.

How Nyovah Splits the Two Jobs

Nyovah is built around that split. Your planetary positions, your dasha timeline and the transits active today are computed by an ephemeris engine from your birth details, before any language model is involved. The model then receives those finished facts and explains them. It is never asked to work out a position or a date, and the dasha dates it quotes come from the engine, not from the model's recall.

The practical difference is that the exact things, such as when a period begins and ends, are the same every time you ask, and the parts that are judgement, such as what a window tends to bring, are labelled as a window rather than dressed up as a promised date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upload my kundli to a chatbot and get accurate answers?

Not reliably. A chart picture usually shows which sign and house each planet sits in but not the exact degrees, and the Moon's exact degree is what fixes your dasha dates. The model also has to read the picture correctly, which is easy to get wrong because North and South Indian layouts are drawn differently. Then it has to do date arithmetic and recall where the planets are today, with no ephemeris to check against. It is good at explaining a chart you already trust; it is not a source of the chart's numbers.

Why can’t a chatbot calculate my planetary positions?

A language model writes the most plausible next words. It has no built-in ephemeris, which is the astronomical table or software that gives each planet's exact position for a given date, time and place. Unless it is connected to one, it recalls or estimates positions, and a small error in the Moon moves every dasha date after it.

Can a chatbot tell me where Saturn or Jupiter is today?

Only if it is connected to live astronomical data. Otherwise it relies on what it remembers, and sign changes are the hard part: slow planets turn retrograde and can cross a sign boundary more than once, so the exact dates matter. A model that is vaguely right about the year can still be wrong about the date by weeks.

Why does the same question give different answers each time?

Chat models generate text with built-in randomness, so two runs of the same question can come out differently. A computed chart does not behave that way: the same birth details and the same date always produce the same positions and the same dasha dates.

Are chatbots useless for astrology, then?

No. They are good at explaining a term, translating jargon, or helping you work out what to ask. The problem is narrower: asking one to produce the facts a reading depends on. A model connected to a real ephemeris is a different setup, and it is essentially the one we use: compute first, explain after.

How can I test a chatbot on my own chart?

Ask for your Moon nakshatra and pada and your current Mahadasha and Antardasha end dates, in two separate chats, then compare both answers with a computed chart. Then ask where Saturn is today and when it next changes sign, and check that against an ephemeris. If the two chats disagree with each other or with the computed chart, you have your answer.

Does Nyovah use a language model too?

Yes, for the explanation only. Your positions, dasha dates and the transits that are active right now are calculated by an ephemeris engine first. The model is handed those finished facts and writes them up in plain language; it is not asked to work any of them out.
