The Hora (D2) Chart, the Sun and the Moon: Reading Wealth Honestly

The Hora is the simplest divisional chart and the easiest to over-read. It has only two possible signs, so it cannot say much on its own. What it can do is add one classical layer to the houses that actually carry wealth — and the dasha system supplies the dates.

The Hora — D2 — is the divisional chart for wealth. Every 30° sign is cut in half, and each 15° half belongs either to the Sun (the sign Leo) or to the Moon (the sign Cancer). That is the whole construction: unlike the Navamsa (D9), which can place a planet in any of twelve signs, the Hora can only place it in one of two.

Because of that, D2 is a supporting chart, not a verdict. Wealth is read first from the houses, then from the dasha periods that activate them; the Hora adds a layer of emphasis. Nothing on this page is financial advice — it explains a classical method and where its limits sit.

What the Hora Is Asked to Show

Before D2 comes into it, three things in the birth chart carry the wealth question:

The Hora then asks one extra question of the planets involved: do they sit in the Sun’s hora or in the Moon’s? That is the entire contribution of the chart, which is why it should never be read alone.

How the Hora Is Derived

Take a planet’s sidereal longitude and note whether it falls in the first or second 15° of its sign. The sign type then decides which luminary owns each half:

Sign TypeSignsFirst 15° (0°–15°)Second 15° (15°–30°)
OddAries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, AquariusLeo — the Sun's horaCancer — the Moon's hora
EvenTaurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, PiscesCancer — the Moon's horaLeo — the Sun's hora

Four worked examples, computed by the same rules Nyovah’s engine uses:

Sidereal positionHora (D2) signWhich hora
5° AriesLeoSun's hora
20° AriesCancerMoon's hora
5° TaurusCancerMoon's hora
20° TaurusLeoSun's hora

One honest note on schools: this is the Parashari two-sign Hora, which is what Nyovah computes. Some modern practitioners use a different, twelve-sign “Parivritti” hora instead. They are different constructions that give different charts, so a D2 read in another tool may not match this one — that is a difference of method, not an error in either.

Reading the Sun’s Hora and the Moon’s Hora

The classical texts associate the Sun’s hora with wealth that is earned through one’s own effort, authority and initiative, and the Moon’s hora with wealth that is built by nurturing, steadiness and accumulation over time. These are tendencies of temperament, not amounts of money.

Commonly cited summaries of the Parashari texts also describe a fit between planet and hora: Sun, Mars and Jupiter are called solar planets and are said to do better in the Sun’s hora; Moon, Venus and Saturn are called lunar planets and are said to do better in the Moon’s hora; Mercury is read as adaptable to either. In practice you look at the 2nd lord, the 11th lord and Jupiter, and note which hora each occupies and whether it is the one that suits it.

“The houses say where the money is. The Hora only says what kind of effort it tends to favour.”

Where the Dates Actually Come From

The Hora, like every divisional chart, is static — it has no time axis. It cannot say that money will improve in a given year. The dates come from the Vimshottari dasha: the periods of the 2nd lord, the 11th lord and Jupiter are the ones that bring the wealth themes forward, and the Dhana Yoga guide shows how those combinations are identified. Nyovah gives each of those boundaries to the exact day.

The Honest Limits

Two signs is a coarse instrument

With only two possible placements, roughly half of all planets land in each hora. A planet being in the Sun’s hora is not a rare signal, so it cannot carry much weight by itself.

It is not an income forecast

D2 does not produce a figure, a level of wealth or a guarantee. Financial outcomes depend on choices, markets and circumstances no chart contains. Treat this as one classical lens, and do not make financial decisions from it.

The birth time sets the ceiling

The ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes, so the D2 lagna changes between Leo and Cancer roughly every sixty minutes of birth time. A birth time that is off by an hour or more can flip the whole chart. Planets close to a 15° boundary are also sensitive to small errors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Hora (D2) chart?

The Hora is the divisional chart for wealth. Each 30° sign is split into two halves of 15°, and each half is assigned to the Sun’s hora (Leo) or the Moon’s hora (Cancer), so a planet in D2 can only fall in one of those two signs. It is a supporting chart that adds emphasis to the 2nd house, 11th house and Jupiter; it does not read wealth on its own.

How is the D2 chart calculated?

Take a planet’s sidereal longitude and check whether it is in the first or second 15° of its sign. In odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius) the first half is the Sun’s hora (Leo) and the second half the Moon’s hora (Cancer). In even signs it is reversed: the first half is the Moon’s hora and the second half the Sun’s.

What is the difference between the Sun’s hora and the Moon’s hora?

Traditionally the Sun’s hora is linked with wealth earned through personal effort, authority and initiative, and the Moon’s hora with wealth built through steadiness, nurturing and accumulation. These describe a style of earning, not an amount, and they carry meaning only alongside the 2nd house, 11th house and Jupiter.

Can the D2 chart tell me how much money I will make?

No. D2 has no time axis and no way to express quantity. It cannot say how much you will earn or when. Dates come from Vimshottari dasha periods of the planets that rule or occupy the wealth houses, and even those describe periods of emphasis, not guaranteed outcomes. This is not financial advice.

Why does another website show a different Hora chart?

There are two constructions in use. The Parashari Hora, which Nyovah computes, has two signs only (Leo and Cancer). Some modern tools use a twelve-sign “Parivritti” hora instead. Both are deliberate methods, but they produce different charts, so the two will not match.
