The Chaturvimshamsa divides each sign into twenty-four parts and gives every part a sign of its own. The chart is read for education, learning, knowledge and academic achievement and supports the birth chart's study houses. The birth-chart side of the topic is in Education Success in Kundli.
How the D24 Is Built
Each 30° sign is divided into twenty-four equal parts of 1.25° (1°15'). Counting starts from a fixed sign that depends only on whether the sign is odd or even:
| Sign type | Signs | Counting starts from |
|---|---|---|
| Odd | Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius | Leo |
| Even | Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces | Cancer |
From that starting sign, count forward one sign per part, wrapping around the zodiac as needed: the 24 parts cover the twelve signs twice. The same procedure on the ascendant gives the D24 lagna. Nyovah's engine implements the rule from the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra.
A worked example
Take a planet at 9°00' Pisces. At 1.25° per part it falls in part number 8 of twenty-four. Pisces is an even sign, so counting starts from Cancer. Part 1 is Cancer, and counting on to part 8 lands on Aquarius. That is the planet's D24 sign. (This was run through the engine's own D24 function, not counted by hand.)
What You Read in the D24
The birth chart comes first: the 4th house (schooling), the 5th (intelligence and study), the 9th (higher education), and Mercury and Jupiter as the natural significators of intellect and knowledge. The D24 is then used to test that statement:
- The D24 lagna and its lord.
- The D24 4th and 5th houses and the planets in them.
- Where Mercury, Jupiter and the birth chart's 4th and 5th lords fall in the D24.
What Nyovah Reads From Your D24
- When a question is about education, studies or exams, Nyovah computes the D24 and passes its planet, sign and house placements into the answer.
- You can open your D24 in the DIVE tab at any time.
- For divisional charts Nyovah reports positions only. It does not grade a planet as strong or weak inside the D24.
How Sensitive Is the D24 to Birth Time?
The D24 lagna comes from the exact degree of the ascendant, and the ascendant moves around the zodiac once a day. We measured this with the same engine that builds your chart: running a full 24 hours of birth times minute by minute, the ascendant advanced 0.21° to 0.36° per minute, 0.25° on average, which is the familiar rule of thumb of about one degree every four minutes. One D24 division is 1.25° wide, so the D24 lagna changes sign roughly every 5 minutes of birth time.
That is only a few minutes. A time written down to the nearest five minutes can land in the wrong D24 division. The Moon moves about 0.57° an hour in our engine, so its D24 sign holds for roughly 132 minutes. The lagna is the fragile part, and it sets every house in the D24. The signs of slow planets are far steadier, but house positions are reliable only with an exact birth time.
The D24 Shows No Dates
Like the birth chart and every other divisional chart, the D24 is a static picture. It has no ages, no sequence and no calendar in it, so reading it more carefully will never produce a date. It can say how the education side of a chart is set up and whether the birth chart's statement holds under magnification. When it happens comes only from the Vimshottari dasha, which splits a life into planetary periods with exact start and end dates computed from the Moon's position at birth.
The usual order is therefore: find the planets that carry the matter in the birth chart, test them in the D24, then look up the dated periods those planets rule.
The Honest Limits
- It cannot predict an exam result or a rank. It describes emphasis and a pattern of learning, not an outcome.
- It is not a measure of ability. Nothing in a chart sets a ceiling on what a person can learn.
- It cannot give dates. Study-friendly periods come from the dasha.
- It needs an exact birth time. A 1.25° division passes in about five minutes.
The general rule and the missing piece: everything above is a rule you can apply to any chart. What no general article can give you is your own answer: which sign your D24 lagna is, where Mercury and Jupiter fall in it, and which dated dasha periods belong to the planets that carry your study houses. That comes from your exact birth date, time and place, and it is different for every chart.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Chaturvimshamsa (D24) chart?
The Chaturvimshamsa, or D24, also called Siddhamsa, is the divisional chart read for education, learning, knowledge and academic achievement. It divides each 30 degree sign into twenty-four parts of 1.25 degrees and assigns each part a sign, producing a full twelve-house chart read as a supporting layer to the study houses of the birth chart.
How is the D24 calculated?
Find how far a planet sits into its sign and divide by 1.25 degrees to get a part number from 1 to 24. For odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius) counting starts from Leo. For even signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces) it starts from Cancer. Count forward by the part number, wrapping round the zodiac, to reach the D24 sign. The same method on the ascendant gives the D24 lagna.
Which houses and planets show education in a chart?
The 4th house for schooling, the 5th for intelligence and study, the 9th for higher education, with Mercury and Jupiter as the natural significators of intellect and knowledge. The D24 then tests how those factors hold under magnification.
Can the D24 predict exam results?
No. It describes emphasis and a pattern of learning, not an outcome. Nothing in a chart sets a ceiling on what a person can learn, and a result depends on far more than a chart can see.
How accurate does my birth time need to be for the D24?
Very accurate. The ascendant advances about 0.25 degrees per minute in our engine, so a 1.25 degree D24 division passes in roughly 5 minutes. A birth time rounded to the nearest five minutes can land in the wrong D24 division.
Can the D24 tell me when to study or change courses?
No. The D24 is a static chart with no time axis. Timing comes from the Vimshottari dasha, which gives exact dated periods, read with transits as triggers.
Is the D24 more important than the 5th house?
No. The birth chart's 4th and 5th houses and their lords come first. The D24 tests and adds detail to that statement, and reading it alone inverts the method.
Does Nyovah use the D24?
Yes. When a question is about education, studies or exams, Nyovah computes the D24 and passes its planet, sign and house into the answer, and your D24 is available in the DIVE tab. Nyovah reports positions only and does not grade planets as strong or weak in the D24.
