The Vimshamsa (D20) Chart: Worship, Sadhana and How It Is Built

The Vimshamsa, written D20, is the divisional chart classically read for spiritual practice, worship and sadhana. It is the chart where honest framing matters most, because spiritual progress is the one thing in life that cannot be scored. Here is the exact rule that builds it, a worked example, what the tradition reads in it, and what it leaves alone.

The Vimshamsa divides each sign into twenty parts and gives every part a sign of its own. The chart is read for spiritual practice, worship, devotion and the direction of inner life. It supports the birth chart's houses of faith and liberation and never stands in for them.

How the D20 Is Built

Each 30° sign is divided into twenty equal parts of 1.5° (1°30'). Counting starts from a sign that depends on the sign's modality (movable, fixed or dual):

Sign typeSignsCounting starts from
MovableAries, Cancer, Libra, CapricornAries
FixedTaurus, Leo, Scorpio, AquariusSagittarius
DualGemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, PiscesLeo

From the starting sign, count forward one sign per part, wrapping around the zodiac: the twenty parts cover the twelve signs once and then eight more. The same procedure on the ascendant gives the D20 lagna. Nyovah's engine implements the rule from the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra.

A worked example

Take a planet at 11°00' Taurus. At 1.5° per part it falls in part number 8 of twenty. Taurus is a fixed sign, so counting starts from Sagittarius. Part 1 is Sagittarius, and counting on to part 8 lands on Cancer. That is the planet's D20 sign. (This was run through the engine's own D20 function, not counted by hand.)

What You Read in the D20

The birth chart comes first: the 5th house (mantra, devotion), the 9th (dharma and faith), the 12th (retreat and liberation), and Jupiter and Ketu, the classical significators of spiritual inclination and moksha. The D20 then tests that statement:

How Sensitive Is the D20 to Birth Time?

The D20 lagna comes from the exact degree of the ascendant, and the ascendant moves around the zodiac once a day. We measured this with the same engine that builds your chart: running a full 24 hours of birth times minute by minute, the ascendant advanced 0.21° to 0.36° per minute, 0.25° on average, which is the familiar rule of thumb of about one degree every four minutes. One D20 division is 1.5° wide, so the D20 lagna changes sign roughly every 6 minutes of birth time.

The Moon moves about 0.57° an hour in our engine, so its D20 sign holds for roughly 158 minutes (about 2.6 hours). The lagna is the fragile part: it can change within a few minutes of birth time, and with it every house in the D20. House positions are reliable only with an exact birth time, while the signs of slow planets are far steadier.

The D20 Shows No Dates

Like the birth chart and every other divisional chart, the D20 is a static picture. It has no ages, no sequence and no calendar in it, so reading it more carefully will never produce a date. It can say how the spiritual side of a chart is set up and whether the birth chart's statement holds under magnification. When it happens comes only from the Vimshottari dasha, which splits a life into planetary periods with exact start and end dates computed from the Moon's position at birth.

The usual order is therefore: find the planets that carry the matter in the birth chart, test them in the D20, then look up the dated periods those planets rule.

The Honest Limits

The general rule and the missing piece: everything above is a rule you can apply to any chart. What no general article can give you is your own answer: which sign your D20 lagna is, where Jupiter and Ketu fall in it, and which dated dasha periods belong to the planets that carry your houses of faith and liberation. That comes from your exact birth date, time and place, and it is different for every chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Vimshamsa (D20) chart?

The Vimshamsa, or D20, is the divisional chart read for spiritual practice, worship, devotion and the direction of inner life. It divides each 30 degree sign into twenty parts of 1.5 degrees and assigns each part a sign, producing a full twelve-house chart read as a supporting layer to the houses of faith and liberation in the birth chart.

How is the D20 calculated?

Find how far a planet sits into its sign and divide by 1.5 degrees to get a part number from 1 to 20. For movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) counting starts from Aries. For fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) it starts from Sagittarius. For dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) it starts from Leo. Count forward by the part number, wrapping round the zodiac, to reach the D20 sign. The same method on the ascendant gives the D20 lagna.

Which houses and planets show spirituality in a chart?

The 5th house for mantra and devotion, the 9th for dharma and faith, the 12th for retreat and liberation, with Jupiter and Ketu as the classical significators of spiritual inclination and moksha. The D20 then tests how those factors hold under magnification.

Can the D20 tell how spiritual a person is?

No. A chart describes inclination and emphasis, not merit or attainment, and nothing in it ranks one person or path above another. Anyone claiming to grade spirituality from a chart is going beyond the method.

How accurate does my birth time need to be for the D20?

Quite accurate. The ascendant advances about 0.25 degrees per minute in our engine, so a 1.5 degree D20 division passes in roughly 6 minutes. The D20 lagna can change within a few minutes of birth time.

Can the D20 tell me when a spiritual phase will come?

No. The D20 is a static chart with no time axis. Periods that emphasise inner life come from the Vimshottari dasha, which gives exact dated periods, read with transits as triggers.

Can a remedy or ritual change my D20?

No. A chart records the sky at your birth, and nothing done afterwards changes it. Nyovah does not claim that any remedy changes a chart or its results.

Does Nyovah use the D20?

Yes. When a question is about spiritual practice or a spiritual path, Nyovah computes the D20 and passes its planet, sign and house into the answer, and your D20 is available in the DIVE tab. Nyovah reports positions only and does not grade planets as strong or weak in the D20.
