The Chaturthamsa (D4) Chart: Property, Fixed Assets and How It Is Built

The Chaturthamsa, written D4 and also called Turyamsa, is the divisional chart for property, home and fixed assets. It is also the one chart in this series whose construction rule has been a source of mistakes, including in our own earlier build. Here is the rule as the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives it, a worked example, what to read in it, and why a D4 cannot tell you the date you will buy a house.

The Chaturthamsa divides each sign into four parts and gives every part a sign of its own. The resulting chart is read for home, land, property and fixed assets, and in some texts for general fortune. As with every divisional chart, it supports the birth chart's 4th house rather than replacing it. The birth-chart side of this topic is covered in Property Yoga in Kundli.

How the D4 Is Built

Each 30° sign is divided into four equal parts of 7.5° (7°30'). The classical rule is that the four parts belong to the sign itself and to the signs 4th, 7th and 10th from it, that is, the sign plus its three angles. It is the same for every sign, with no odd-even or movable-fixed-dual distinction.

PartDegrees within the signD4 sign
10° to 7°30'The sign itself
27°30' to 15°The 4th sign from it
315° to 22°30'The 7th sign from it
422°30' to 30°The 10th sign from it

The same procedure on the ascendant gives the D4 lagna.

A worked example

Take a planet at 20°00' Virgo. At 7.5° per part it falls in part number 3 of four. Part 3 belongs to the 7th sign from Virgo, which is Pisces. That is the planet's D4 sign. (This was run through the engine's own D4 function, not counted by hand.)

Why the rule deserves a note

Divisional-chart rules are easy to get subtly wrong, and the D4 is a good example. An earlier version of Nyovah's D4 counted by a movable-fixed-dual sequential pattern that did not match the classical text, which meant its signs were wrong for planets across the chart. We found it, replaced it with the rule above, and now state it here so you can check it. If another app or book shows you a different D4, compare the counting rule before you compare the result.

What You Read in the D4

The birth chart comes first: the 4th house, its lord, the planets in it and aspecting it, and Mars as the natural significator of land. The D4 is used to test that statement:

What Nyovah Reads From Your D4

How Sensitive Is the D4 to Birth Time?

The D4 lagna comes from the exact degree of the ascendant, and the ascendant moves around the zodiac once a day. We measured this with the same engine that builds your chart: running a full 24 hours of birth times minute by minute, the ascendant advanced 0.21° to 0.36° per minute, 0.25° on average, which is the familiar rule of thumb of about one degree every four minutes. One D4 division is 7.5° wide, so the D4 lagna changes sign roughly every 30 minutes of birth time.

The D4 is the most forgiving of the charts in this series, because its parts are the widest. Planets are stable too: the Moon moves about 0.57° an hour in our engine, so its D4 sign holds for roughly 13 hours. Even so, a birth time that is off by half an hour can change the D4 lagna, and with it every D4 house.

The D4 Shows No Dates

Like the birth chart and every other divisional chart, the D4 is a static picture. It has no ages, no sequence and no calendar in it, so reading it more carefully will never produce a date. It can say how the property side of a chart is set up and whether the birth chart's statement holds under magnification. When it happens comes only from the Vimshottari dasha, which splits a life into planetary periods with exact start and end dates computed from the Moon's position at birth.

The usual order is therefore: find the planets that carry the matter in the birth chart, test them in the D4, then look up the dated periods those planets rule.

The Honest Limits

The general rule and the missing piece: everything above is a rule you can apply to any chart. What no general article can give you is your own answer: which sign your D4 lagna is, where the 4th lord and Mars fall in your D4, and which dated dasha periods belong to the planets that carry your property houses. That comes from your exact birth date, time and place, and it is different for every chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Chaturthamsa (D4) chart?

The Chaturthamsa, or D4, is the divisional chart read for home, land, property and fixed assets, and in some texts for general fortune. It divides each 30 degree sign into four parts of 7.5 degrees and assigns each part a sign, producing a full twelve-house chart read as a supporting layer to the 4th house of the birth chart.

How is the D4 calculated?

Find how far a planet sits into its sign and divide by 7.5 degrees to get a part number from 1 to 4. The four parts belong to the sign itself and the signs 4th, 7th and 10th from it, for every sign. Part 1 is the sign, part 2 the 4th from it, part 3 the 7th, part 4 the 10th. The same method on the ascendant gives the D4 lagna.

Why might my D4 differ from another app?

Because the counting rule may differ. Nyovah follows the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra rule of the sign and its 4th, 7th and 10th. Our own earlier version used a different pattern that did not match the text, and was corrected. If two sources disagree, compare the counting rules before comparing results.

Is the D4 more important than the 4th house?

No. The birth chart's 4th house, its lord, the planets in it and aspecting it, and Mars as the significator of land, come first. The D4 tests and adds detail to that statement. Reading the D4 alone inverts the method.

How accurate does my birth time need to be for the D4?

Less than for most divisional charts, but still not loose. The ascendant advances about 0.25 degrees per minute in our engine, so a 7.5 degree D4 division passes in roughly 30 minutes. A birth time off by half an hour can change the D4 lagna.

Can the D4 tell me when I will buy a house?

No. The D4 is a static chart with no time axis. It can show how the property side of a chart is set up. The window when a purchase is supported comes from the Vimshottari dasha, read with transits as triggers.

Can the D4 tell me whether a property purchase is a good decision?

No. A chart describes emphasis and timing, not whether a particular purchase, price or contract is sound. Financial and legal decisions belong to your own judgement and qualified advisers.

Does Nyovah use the D4?

Yes. When a question is about property, land, a house or a vehicle, Nyovah computes the D4 and passes its planet, sign and house into the answer, and your D4 is available in the DIVE tab. Nyovah reports positions only and does not grade planets as strong or weak in the D4.
