Guru Chandala Yoga is formed when Jupiter and Rahu are in the same house. Guru is Jupiter, the planet of wisdom, teachers, dharma and good counsel. Rahu is the shadow planet of appetite, disruption and the unconventional. The name is the traditional one, and "Chandala" is an old term of social ranking; we use it because it is how the yoga is searched and cited, and the astrological idea is only about Jupiter's guidance being disturbed by Rahu.
What the Yoga Is Read to Mean
The classical reading is that Jupiter's judgement is clouded or redirected by Rahu. It can show up as confusion between conventional and unconventional paths, scepticism toward received beliefs, a poor choice of teachers or advisers, or a break from the family tradition. The same texts also note a positive side: unconventional wisdom, and success along foreign or non-traditional paths. The practical advice that follows is simply to choose mentors and advisers carefully.
Exactly What Nyovah Checks
| Question | Nyovah's rule |
|---|---|
| Same house? | Required. Jupiter and Rahu in the same house of the chart (whole-sign houses). |
| Close degree conjunction required? | No. Any distance within the same sign counts. |
| Rahu only, or Ketu too? | Rahu only. Jupiter with Ketu is not reported as Guru Chandala. |
| Jupiter's sign strength checked? | No. The same label appears whether Jupiter is exalted, in its own sign or debilitated. |
| Aspect without conjunction? | Not counted. |
What this means for you: the label tells you the two planets share a house. It does not tell you how strong Jupiter is, how close the two are, or which house is involved, and all three change the reading a great deal. A Jupiter in Cancer or Sagittarius (exalted, or in its own sign) with Rahu is not the same situation as a debilitated Jupiter with Rahu, even though Nyovah gives both the same name.
How Common Is It?
Rahu sits in one of the twelve signs, and shares a sign with Jupiter in about one chart in twelve. When we ran Nyovah's engine on 4,000 randomly generated birth charts, Guru Chandala Yoga appeared in about 8%, which fits that arithmetic. It is a modest-frequency formation, found in a large number of ordinary lives.
Where Schools Differ
- Rahu or Ketu. Some teachers apply the same idea to Jupiter with Ketu. Nyovah checks Rahu only.
- Conjunction or aspect. Some count Rahu's aspect on Jupiter, or Jupiter's on Rahu. Nyovah counts the same-house case only.
- Closeness. Teachers generally give a close conjunction more weight than one that is many degrees apart within a sign. Nyovah does not.
- Jupiter's strength. Most teachers read the effect as milder when Jupiter is strong and harsher when it is weak. Nyovah does not adjust the label.
When Does Guru Chandala Yoga Act?
A formation is not a result. Effects are expected mainly in the Mahadasha and Antardasha of Jupiter and Rahu (Jupiter's Mahadasha lasts 16 years and Rahu's 18), and when transits activate the house the pair occupies. Outside those periods the yoga is mostly dormant. How the periods run is in the Vimshottari dasha explained; the Rahu period in particular is covered in Rahu Mahadasha, and each planet in Jupiter and Rahu.
The general rule and the missing piece: anyone can see whether Jupiter and Rahu share a house. What takes computation is how close they are, what sign Jupiter is in, which house is involved for your ascendant, and the exact dates of your Jupiter and Rahu periods. There is no evidence that any remedy changes a chart; what you can do is know when the relevant periods run and take extra care in choosing guides and advisers during them.
Sources: Nyovah's engine cites Brihat Jataka (Ch. 2) and Jataka Parijata (Ch. 4). Chapter numbering differs between editions and translations, and the yoga is discussed in different ways across later traditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Guru Chandala Yoga?
Guru Chandala Yoga is formed when Jupiter and Rahu are in the same house. Classically it is read as Jupiter's guidance being clouded or redirected by Rahu: unconventional beliefs, a break from tradition, or a poor choice of teachers, along with a possible gift for unconventional wisdom.
How do I check Guru Chandala Yoga in my kundli?
See whether Jupiter and Rahu are in the same house of your chart. If they are, Nyovah reports the yoga. Then check separately how close the two are and which sign Jupiter is in.
Is Guru Chandala Yoga a curse?
No. It is a traditional name for one combination, read as a tendency about guidance and belief. The same texts note a positive side, and no yoga fixes an outcome.
Does Nyovah count Jupiter with Ketu?
No. Nyovah reports Guru Chandala Yoga only for Jupiter with Rahu. Some teachers apply the idea to Ketu as well; schools differ.
Is Guru Chandala Yoga common?
About one chart in twelve. Rahu is in one of twelve signs, and in Nyovah's test of 4,000 random charts the yoga appeared in about 8%.
Does it matter if Jupiter is strong?
Most teachers read the effect as milder when Jupiter is strong, for example in its own or exalted sign, and harsher when weak. Nyovah does not adjust the label for this, so check Jupiter's sign separately.
When does Guru Chandala Yoga give results?
Mainly in the Mahadasha and Antardasha of Jupiter and Rahu, and when transits activate the house they occupy. Jupiter's Mahadasha lasts 16 years and Rahu's lasts 18.
Can anything remove Guru Chandala Yoga?
There is no evidence that any remedy changes a chart. The practical response is to know when the Jupiter and Rahu periods run and to choose mentors and advisers with extra care during them.
