Lakshmi Yoga is built around the 9th house, the house of fortune, merit and dharma. The classical statement is that the 9th lord is strongly placed and the lord of the ascendant (the lagna lord, the planet representing the self) is also strong. When fortune and the self are both supported, the yoga is read to give wealth, prosperity and lasting good fortune.
Exactly What Nyovah Checks
Nyovah finds the lord of the 9th house and the lord of the ascendant, then tests three conditions.
- Dignity of the 9th lord. It must be in its own sign, its exaltation sign or its moolatrikona sign.
- Placement of the 9th lord. It must be in a kendra or trikona (the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th or 10th house) for the full form.
- Placement of the lagna lord. It must be in a kendra or trikona.
| 9th lord | Lagna lord | What Nyovah reports |
|---|---|---|
| Own / exalted / moolatrikona, in a kendra or trikona | In a kendra or trikona | Lakshmi Yoga, graded very strong |
| Own / exalted / moolatrikona, in a dusthana (6th, 8th, 12th) | In a kendra or trikona | Lakshmi Yoga (modified), graded moderate |
| Own / exalted / moolatrikona, in the 2nd, 3rd or 11th | Any | Nothing reported |
| Not in its own, exalted or moolatrikona sign | Any | Nothing reported |
| Either form of the 9th lord | Not in a kendra or trikona | Nothing reported |
The Modified Form
When the 9th lord has the right dignity but sits in a dusthana, the classical full yoga is not met, because the 9th lord is in a house of struggle rather than a supportive one. Nyovah reports this as Lakshmi Yoga (modified) and says so: the wealth potential is real, but it is read to arrive through effort, service and overcoming obstacles, with gains increasing after middle age and during the 9th lord's period, not freely. It is graded lower than the full form, and it is not presented as the full yoga.
What "strongly placed" means here: the classical statement says the lagna lord should be strong. Nyovah's test for it is a house test only: kendra or trikona. It does not check the lagna lord's sign dignity, combustion or debilitation. A lagna lord in a kendra but debilitated would pass. Read the label as "the placements are right", and check the lagna lord's own strength separately.
How Common Is It?
In a test run of Nyovah's engine on 4,000 randomly generated birth charts, the full Lakshmi Yoga appeared in about 7% and the modified form in about 2.5%. So roughly one chart in fourteen has the full form, and about one in forty the modified one. It is uncommon enough to mean something, though not rare.
Where Schools Differ
- What "strong" means for the lagna lord. Some sources read it as a kendra or trikona placement, others also accept the lagna lord in its own or exalted sign on its own. Nyovah tests the kendra or trikona house only, so a lagna lord that is strong by sign alone, outside those houses, is not credited.
- Which dignities count for the 9th lord. Nyovah accepts own, exalted and moolatrikona signs. Some sources limit it to own or exalted.
- The modified form. A 9th lord in a dusthana is not part of the usual classical statement. The modified label is Nyovah's way of showing a partial case honestly instead of either hiding it or calling it the full yoga.
When Does Lakshmi Yoga Deliver?
A formation is not a result. The yoga is expected to show up mainly in the Mahadasha and Antardasha of the 9th lord and of the lagna lord, and when transits activate the 9th house. A strong Lakshmi Yoga can wait years for its planet's period. The dasha system is explained in the Vimshottari dasha explained.
The general rule and the missing piece: identifying the 9th lord and its sign takes a minute. What takes computation is the planet's exact sign and dignity, which of the two forms your chart actually has, the lagna lord's own strength, and the dates of both planets' periods. For the wider family of wealth and status combinations, see Dhana Yoga and Raj Yoga in kundli.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Lakshmi Yoga?
Lakshmi Yoga is formed when the lord of the 9th house is in its own, exalted or moolatrikona sign in a kendra or trikona, and the lagna lord is also well placed. It is read to give wealth, prosperity and lasting good fortune.
How do I check Lakshmi Yoga in my kundli?
Find the lord of your 9th house and see whether it is in its own, exaltation or moolatrikona sign and in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th or 10th house. Then check that the lagna lord is in a kendra or trikona. Nyovah does this for you and reports the result.
What is the modified Lakshmi Yoga?
It is Nyovah's label for a 9th lord with the right dignity but placed in a dusthana (6th, 8th or 12th), with the lagna lord well placed. The wealth potential is read to arrive through effort and obstacles rather than freely, and it is graded lower than the full yoga.
Does the lagna lord need to be strong in sign as well?
Some sources say so. Nyovah's test for the lagna lord is a house test only (kendra or trikona), so it does not check sign dignity, combustion or debilitation. Check the lagna lord's own strength separately.
Is Lakshmi Yoga common?
In Nyovah's test of 4,000 random charts, the full form appeared in about 7% (roughly one in fourteen) and the modified form in about 2.5%. It is uncommon enough to mean something but not rare.
What if the 9th lord is in the 2nd, 3rd or 11th house?
Nyovah reports nothing. The full form needs a kendra or trikona and the modified form needs a dusthana, so a 9th lord in the 2nd, 3rd or 11th house meets neither.
When does Lakshmi Yoga give results?
Mainly in the Mahadasha and Antardasha of the 9th lord and the lagna lord, and when transits activate the 9th house. A strong Lakshmi Yoga can wait years for its planet's period.
Does Lakshmi Yoga guarantee wealth?
No. It points to a tendency toward prosperity and good fortune, but it is a formation, not a result, and it depends on the strength of the planets and the rest of the chart.
