Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga: The Five Great-Person Yogas

Pancha Mahapurusha means "five great persons", and these five yogas are among the cleanest in Vedic astrology: one simple rule, applied to five planets. A strong planet in a strong place gives a clear, recognisable character to its area of life. Here is the rule, the five yogas and what each is read to give, and the question classical schools still disagree about.

The Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas are described in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika. They apply to five planets: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. The Sun, the Moon and the nodes do not form them.

The One Rule

A Mahapurusha Yoga forms when the planet is in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the ascendant) and in its own sign, its sign of exaltation, or its moolatrikona. Both conditions have to hold. A planet in its own sign in the 3rd house, or a planet in a kendra in a neutral sign, does not qualify.

The logic is the same as elsewhere in the system: a kendra gives a planet the capacity to act, and dignity gives it the quality to act well.

The Five Yogas

YogaPlanetQualifying signsRead to give
RuchakaMarsAries, Scorpio, Capricorn (exalted)Courage, drive, command, physical and leadership strength
BhadraMercuryGemini, Virgo (own and exalted)Intellect, eloquence, analytical and commercial skill
HamsaJupiterSagittarius, Pisces, Cancer (exalted)Wisdom, learning, ethical standing, respect
MalavyaVenusTaurus, Libra, Pisces (exalted)Comfort, refinement, the arts, harmony in relationships
ShashaSaturnCapricorn, Aquarius, Libra (exalted)Discipline, endurance, authority over large groups or systems

Some of these signs are shared: Venus is exalted in Pisces, which is also Jupiter's own sign, and Saturn is exalted in Libra, Venus's own sign. The same sign in a kendra can therefore support more than one yoga, depending on which planet is there.

Does Combustion Cancel the Yoga?

Here the classical tradition is not unanimous. A planet too close to the Sun (combust) loses independent strength. Some schools say that cancels a Mahapurusha Yoga outright; others say it only weakens it, especially if the planet is well supported by other factors such as its strength in divisional charts.

An honest approach: where a planet qualifies by sign and house but is combust, the right description is a candidate yoga with reduced confidence, not a confirmed one and not a non-event. Anything that tells you flatly one way or the other is choosing a side the tradition has not settled.

Mercury is the planet this affects most. It never travels more than about 28° from the Sun, so it is combust more often than any other, and a Bhadra Yoga needs particular care.

What the Yogas Do and Do Not Mean

Each yoga describes a strong, clear expression of one planet's nature in a person's life: a person with Hamsa Yoga is read as having Jupiter's qualities prominently marked, for example. It is not a prediction that the person will be famous or wealthy, and the texts' language about kings and great men describes tendencies in a very different social world.

Like every yoga, the results are expected mainly in the Mahadasha and Antardasha of the planet forming it. A strong Shasha Yoga is a statement about Saturn's capacity; Saturn's dasha is when that capacity is most in play.

"The yoga says what the planet is capable of. The dasha says when it is asked."

The general rule and the missing piece: the formation rule can be checked by eye. Whether your planet is combust, how it is placed in the divisional charts, and the exact dates of its dasha are computed from your birth data.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas?

Five yogas formed by Mars (Ruchaka), Mercury (Bhadra), Jupiter (Hamsa), Venus (Malavya) and Saturn (Shasha). Each forms when its planet is in a kendra from the ascendant and also in its own sign, sign of exaltation or moolatrikona. The name means five great persons.

How do I know if I have a Mahapurusha Yoga?

Check whether Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn sits in your 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house and, at the same time, in a sign it owns or is exalted in. If both hold for any of the five, that yoga is formed. Then check whether the planet is combust.

Which signs qualify for each yoga?

Mars: Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn. Mercury: Gemini, Virgo. Jupiter: Sagittarius, Pisces, Cancer. Venus: Taurus, Libra, Pisces. Saturn: Capricorn, Aquarius, Libra. In each list the exaltation sign is the last one named, and the planet must also be in a kendra.

Does combustion cancel a Mahapurusha Yoga?

Classical schools disagree. Some treat combustion as cancelling the yoga outright, others as weakening it, especially where the planet has support from other factors. An honest reading treats a combust qualifier as a lower-confidence candidate rather than asserting either extreme.

Are Mahapurusha Yogas rare?

They are less common than the loose yogas because they need two conditions at once. A planet in a kendra is common, and a planet in its own or exalted sign is common, but both together for the same planet occurs in only a fraction of charts. Having none is the usual case.

When do Mahapurusha Yogas give results?

Mainly in the Mahadasha and Antardasha of the planet that forms the yoga, and when transits activate the houses involved. A strong yoga may be quiet until that period starts.

Does Mahapurusha Yoga make someone great?

No. It describes a strong, clear expression of one planet's qualities, such as courage for Mars or learning for Jupiter. Any result depends on the rest of the chart and on the dasha, and the language of kings in old texts should not be read as a promise.
