Viparita Raja Yoga: Harsha, Sarala and Vimala

Most yogas promise something good from something good. Viparita Raja Yoga is the strange one: it says the lords of the difficult houses, placed in difficult houses, cancel each other out and turn into an advantage. It is real classical doctrine, and it is also one of the most common formations on a chart. Here is the exact rule, the three named forms, how common it is, where teachers disagree, and what decides whether it ever shows up in your life.

Viparita Raja Yoga means "reversed royal yoga". The rule is short: the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th house sits in one of those same three houses, which are called the dusthanas (the houses of struggle, loss and hidden matters). The idea is that when the planets that carry difficulty are placed in the houses of difficulty, their harm is spent there and the chart is left with the other side of it: gains, resilience and an unexpected rise.

The Three Named Yogas

YogaPlanet that forms itClassically read as
HarshaThe 6th house lord, in the 6th, 8th or 12th houseSuccess over enemies and competition, strength under pressure, gains through service and persistence
SaralaThe 8th house lord, in the 6th, 8th or 12th houseFearlessness in a crisis, resilience through sudden reversals, long life, interest in hidden or research subjects
VimalaThe 12th house lord, in the 6th, 8th or 12th housePrudence with money, few harmful expenses, an independent and clean reputation, a spiritual turn later in life

The name depends only on which house the planet rules. A chart can have none of them, one, two or all three.

Exactly What Nyovah Checks

Nyovah counts the houses from the ascendant (whole-sign houses), finds the lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th, and looks at where each one sits. Two outcomes are reported:

Placement of the dusthana lordHow Nyovah labels it
In its own dusthana (6th lord in the 6th, 8th lord in the 8th, 12th lord in the 12th)The classic form, graded very strong
In a different dusthana (for example the 6th lord in the 12th)Still a valid Viparita Raja Yoga, graded strong
In any other houseNo yoga

What is not checked: unlike Gajakesari or Budha-Aditya, this rule has no combustion or debilitation gate in Nyovah. The grade comes from placement alone. A dusthana lord that is also burnt by the Sun, or that rules a second, better house, is not downgraded automatically. Read the grade as "the formation is present", and look at the planet separately.

It Is Common, and That Matters

Each dusthana lord has three of the twelve houses that count, so one chance in four of landing in a dusthana. For three lords, the chance that at least one does is about 58% by simple arithmetic (1 minus three-quarters cubed). When we ran Nyovah's engine on 4,000 randomly generated birth charts, it flagged one of the three forms in about 57% of them. In other words, a little over half of all people technically have a Viparita Raja Yoga.

That is the reason a yoga name by itself is weak evidence. The version worth paying attention to is the specific one: which lord, which dusthana, and when that planet's period runs.

Where Teachers Disagree

None of these is a settled consensus, which is why we state the rule we use instead of presenting one reading as the only one.

Why the Result Comes "Through Struggle"

The classical descriptions agree on one thing: this yoga does not hand over gains in comfort. It tends to deliver after effort, after a hard stretch, or in the second half of life, because the very houses involved are the ones that govern obstacles. Treat it as a pattern of recovery and eventual advantage, not as protection from difficulty.

When Does Viparita Raja Yoga Deliver?

A formation is not a result. The yoga is expected to show up mainly in the Mahadasha and Antardasha of the planet that forms it, and when the house it rules is activated by transit. Someone can carry a Harsha Yoga for decades and feel nothing until that planet's period begins. To see when that is, start with the Vimshottari dasha explained.

"A yoga is a condition on a chart. A dasha is a date on a calendar."

The general rule and the missing piece: the rule is easy to read off a chart. What takes computation is which of the three lords you actually have, whether it sits in its own dusthana or another, how that planet is placed otherwise, and the exact dates of its Mahadasha and Antardasha. For the wider family of status yogas this one belongs to, see Raj Yoga in kundli.

Find Out Which Viparita Raja Yoga Your Chart Has, and When

Nyovah checks your 6th, 8th and 12th lords, shows whether each one sits in its own dusthana or another, and lays out the dated dasha periods of the planet involved, so a formation is tied to a calendar rather than a name.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Viparita Raja Yoga?

It is a yoga formed when the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th house is placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house (a dusthana). Classically the difficulties of those houses cancel each other out and turn into gains, usually after effort.

What are Harsha, Sarala and Vimala Yoga?

They are the three named forms. Harsha is the 6th lord in a dusthana, Sarala is the 8th lord in a dusthana, and Vimala is the 12th lord in a dusthana. A chart can have none, one, two or all three.

How do I check Viparita Raja Yoga in my kundli?

Count from the ascendant to find the 6th, 8th and 12th houses, note which planet rules each, and see where that planet sits. If it is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, the formation exists. Nyovah grades the planet's own dusthana higher than a different one.

Is Viparita Raja Yoga common?

Yes. Each dusthana lord has a one-in-four chance of sitting in a dusthana, so about 58% of charts have at least one of the three by simple arithmetic. A test of Nyovah's engine on 4,000 random charts found about 57%.

Does the lord need to be in its own house?

Schools differ. Some definitions count only a lord in a different dusthana, others include the lord in its own. Nyovah accepts any dusthana and grades the own-house case as very strong and a different dusthana as strong.

When does Viparita Raja Yoga give results?

Mainly in the Mahadasha and Antardasha of the planet that forms it, and when the house it rules is activated by transit. The classical descriptions say it delivers through effort or in the second half of life, not from the start.

Does Viparita Raja Yoga guarantee success after a bad period?

No. It is a tendency toward recovery and advantage, not a guarantee, and it does not protect against difficulty. Its result also depends on the strength of the planet and on the rest of the chart.

Does combustion or debilitation cancel Viparita Raja Yoga?

Nyovah does not apply a combustion or debilitation gate to this yoga; the grade comes from the placement alone. Because that is a limit of the rule, it is worth checking the dusthana lord's own strength separately.
